Catching Fire Book Review

Pages: 391 (Hardcover)
Genre: Young Adult Fiction

What they say: "Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge."

What I have to say:

While I love a good dystopian tale, it usually takes me time to muster up the courage to delve in to the dark gloomy places that a good futuristic story lives. Despite my love and admiration for Hunger Games it took me a couple days to work up the umpf to reenter Panem.

However as soon as I did I was reminded of the glory that is Suzanne Collins’ writing. One chapter in my biggest problem was putting the book down and finding a way to go on with my regular life when I would rather be totally engrossed in Panem. Very shortly in to Catching Fire I felt like I too was aboard the train with Katniss and Peeta.

Therefore, my recommendation is simple. If you have not read Hunger Games do so immediately. If you did read Hunger Games run out and get your hands on Catching Fire as soon as possible.

But DO NOT start reading this book until you are certain you have several hours to devote. This book is nearly impossible to put down.

This story is gripping and succeeds in executing every single amazing emotion and element it holds; Catching Fire is full of action, fear, pain, love, romance, longing, hunger, perseverance, and self sacrifice.

Catching Fire is like a boiling kettle ready to burst with the readers diving to scoop up all the pieces.

I still get goose pimples just thinking about the ending.

My rating: 5 stars; I absolutely love this thought-provoking brilliant story.

The Meter Readings:

Adventure-o-meter: SUPER high the adventure never ends in this book.

Kiddie-o-meter: Catching Fire is raw and often brutal. While there is no sex or foul language there is an bounty of violence that is completely and utterly necessary to the story. Note there are also several characters that use drugs and alcohol as barbiturates to null their psychological scars.

Adult-o-meter: Perfect for adult who likes their action adventures stories to hold a bit of romance.

Love the love? Absolutely! Whether you are a Gale or Peeta fan you have to admit both Gale and Peeta are pretty awesome. It would not be a good love triangle with out Katniss having a heck of a choice before her. Gale is sexy and strong and I know she has history with him but Peeta is on his own level. His love takes my breath away. So yah I’m mega crushing on Peeta right now.

Quoteable:

"Why don't you just kill me now?" I blurt out.

"Publicly?" he asks. "That would only add fuel to the flames."

"Arrange an accident, then," I say.

"Who would buy it?" he asks. "Not you, if you were watching."

"Then just tell me what you want me to do. I'll do it," I say.

"If only it were that simple."

(page 23)

Noteable: If you haven't had a chance to check out the fan site JabberJays.com please do. It is pretty sweet. Also, below I have taken the liberty of including an amazing fan made video that was so good I had to watch it several times.

My final say: Rarely, but gleefully, I occasionally read a book that moves me so much that even after I am done reading, I can not bear to put it down. I want to read it again and again because I feel like I am not ready to walk away from the characters. This is how Catching Fire left me.

You review makes me want to read the Hunger Games even more. It's on my pile! I keep hearing such good things about it..although I am a little leary of reading it because it's first person, I like 3rd person novels way more it seems.

Great review! I enjoyed The Hunger Games so much I read it a second time (right after I finished it) because I wasn't ready to let it go. I believe it's time for me to pick up Catching Fire.

Actually I think you'll find that I do NOT have to admit that Gale is pretty awesome. Or even just pretty. But I do find him whiny.

GO PEETA!

I don't fully understand how I'm supposed to survive until Book Three arrives....

Glad you enjoyed it!

Catching Fire made me feel the same as you. I can't wait for the next book! It kind of makes me kick myself that I read it so soon after it came out because I'll just have to wait longer for the next one. Great review!

Really great review, JuJu! I am about half way through this one and I have to say it's been an awesome ride so far! Katniss has to be one of my all time favorite characters. She's cunning, intelligent, and awesome with a bow!

Great review! I definitely haven't had the time to devote to the book yet, so I haven't read it...even though I have it on my desk. Well, that and I'm putting it off as long as possible so there's less of a wait until book 3

ooh, ooh, now I really can't wait to read these. I have not read either book but you have shown me the error of my ways. I love books that consume you so much you can't put them down.

Why oh why oh WHY can't I seem to find a copy of this book anywhere?
I don't want to read the Hunger Games until I have Catching Fire, as well, because of what I keep hearing everyone saying.
BUT I CAN'T FIND A COPY!!!!

I loved this one, too, but I have to say that I'm still quite taken with The Hunger Games! Catching Fire was great, but parts of it had a little of that "been there, done that" feel to them. That's not to say I wasn't totally obsessed with finishing it, though! And whoa -- the ending!!

Oh oh wow! I have to move this one up on my tbr pile!! Adventure and romance, sounds great, thanks!

Ok I'll admit I didn't read your review! but only because I was afraid of spoilers. I'm just at the start of The Hunger Games. I've gotten several kids at school hooked on this series. Too bad book 2 just came out and we'll all need to wait for the next one. WAIT - there is a next one right????

Glad you enjoyed this one too! :D I didnt like it as much as the first, but it was still a great read. I love how you describe your feeling with the book at the end, it's how I felt after reading "Life as we knew it"

Becky said...

Ok. I guess I will have to pluck up the courage and read this then. I think I'll wait until half term on your recommendation so I can read it in one sitting. Great review!

OMG! How did I miss that trailer?! It was awesome and now I'm all worked up that the third book won't come out for so long!!

ParaJunkee said...

I am in complete agreement with you. A book hasn't touched me like these two books in a long time. Also, I can't even remember reading a sequel that out performed the first book - yet the first book was perfection. These reviews were excellent. I'm glad I stalked on by. - Parajunkee
