Book: My Double Life
Publisher: Penguin
Release date: May 2010
Genre: YA Fiction | Chick Lit
Goodreads: My Double Life
My summary: Alexa Garcia (and her hard working single mom) have always had to scrimp and save for every dollar. So when a pop singer offers her thousands of dollars to pretend to be her, Alexa pushes all rationale out the window and drops everything for the bright lights, big money, and a chance to meet her long lost father.
My say: I love Janette Rallison's writing. She always creates wonderful characters who have heart, a good moral compass, and a strong sense of family. My Double Life is a sweet fun journey of mistaken identity and self discovery. You will absolutely root for Alexa from start to finish.
My verdict: My Double Life is light, spunky, and heart felt.
My recommendation: All fans of Young Adult fiction should try Janette Rallison. Her books have never failed me.
My star rating: 5 out of 5 stars; I love this book and want a hardcover copy for my shelf.
My cover thoughts: Turns out the dyed blonde hair is accurate. I like the cover I just wish the model was more ethnic looking. Alexa describes her skin as, "olive toned". Therefore my suggestion for the cover is someone that looks a bit more like Jessica Alba or even Shakira.
My slices:
- Kudos to Janette for nailing a Hispanic abuelita. I never stopped giggling at abuela's antics, telenovela inspired advice, and commentary.
- My favorite abuela quote: "Somebody ought to smack that girl good and hard with a Bible." Leave it to my grandma to use the holy book as a weapon."
My meter readings:
- Kiddie-o-meter: This story is safe for even young teens. There is no sex, social commentary, or foul language and only minor mentions to premarital sex.
- Adult-o-meter: Adults will relate to Alexa, her journey to find her father, and her mother's struggles.
My contest note: Check back April 1st when I will be providing my followers the opportunity to win my gently used ARC of My Double Life before it's even available for purchase.
My final say: Have you ever been told you resemble someone famous? For the right amount of money would you impersonate a starlet or musician?
Thank you Penguin for making this review possible.

Great review! I've never really been interested in this book, but now I'll have to check it out. It's been said that both my mom and I look kinda like Evangeline Lily - LOST! - but I don't know if I should belive that. haha That's a pretty high hope. I have a picture of Evnageline Lili, though, that whenever I glance at it I think it's my mom. So maybe it's partially true. ;]
Wow, I've never heard of this but it sounds really cool! I love the way you organize your reviews by category, too - that's really neat :D
Thanks for the great review! This book sounds like a rather fun read!
The Book Owl: Evageline Lily is gorgeous! You go girl!
Thanks Amelia and Bookalicious :)
I've been seeing this one around and can't decide if I would like it or not.It might be becuase it reminds me of a Hannah Montana type thing? *eh* I might have to read it though because it seems to be getting good reviews.
I enjoyed your review. I love Rallison books and this one sounds really fun. I love that I can recommend her books without even reading them, because I know they'll be good and clean.
Check out what Rallison's daughter had to say about this book on her post.
Kris: Its SO not Hannah Montana. Definitely check it out.
Mary: Amen darling! I couldn't have put it better.
Cute! I'm not familiar with this book or author but I'll be on the lookout from now on!

A hard copy huh? I love reading whether or not someone will actually rebuy another copy or reread. That usually determines for me if it's worth it!
Great review!
I will add this one to my list!
Hmmm...this is not a book I would ever pick up, but I think you sold me on it. As usual! :-)
Ooh I've been wanting to read this book! I'm so glad you liked it. Thanks for the lovely review :)
I loved your review! I can't wait to pick this up, it sounds like a fun read :) Glad you enjoyed it!
This looks like a really fun read. I'll have to check it out.
Thanks for the review!
I LOVE your reviews!! This looks so good--Janette seems to really excel when it comes to fun, creative plotlines!
This one sounds so interesting! Off to check it out!
Sounds like a great fun read!!
I've said it before but I'll say it again :) - i love how you review! Especially the kiddie meter. I'd seen this one on Goodreads, but this is the first I've really read about it. I think my students could enjoy this one - I mean really who hasn't wanted to pretend to be someone famous!
Great review! I loved My Fair Godmother, and have heard good things about Rallison's other books. I'm glad to see this one didn't disappoint.
Brilliant review! I've yet to read this one, but it sounds good! :)
Nice review! It's good to take a litght and breezy chick-lit break now and then...sounds like this one (or even the author in general) would be a wise choice to try! Thanks for sharing!
Regarding your question...I'm been told a few times I remotely resemble Christina Ricci, at least in her role in the movie Casper...would I impersonate her? Um...let me think...YES! Starlet life, money money, time to (read) do what I like....where do I sign up? =0)
GMR: LOL Right on! :)
Jill: Thank you sweetie. That's such an honor coming from the real deal like you ;)
Simcha: Welcome :) Thanks for visiting.
Bookworm: She sure does!
Nice review! I haven't read this author and it sounds like I would really like this book! Thanks for the heads up :)
sounds like a good author to look into.
I once impersonated Melissa Jonehart in hopes of getting a good tip while waitressing. Little girl's mom wanted me to pretend to be Clarissa from Clarissa Explains It All for her daughter (I used to look just like Jonehart.) It was fun!
Lisa: OMG How funny! Thanks for sharing your funny tale :)
eee i'm finding so many of these awesome review blogs!! love yours too!! great layout, great colors -- and great, great reviews. i love that i'm stumbling upon all these books i otherwise would've never known about! thanks so much for all you do!!
great site!
Ooh, very interesting. I like the sound of this. I would actually go for the money if a pop star randomly asks me to pretend to be her. It sounds like fun, but then again, there may be not-so-fun results as well. Still, I'm always up for an adventure. Haha :P Great review!
Tahereh: Welcome and thank you for your lovely input :) You made me smile :)
For the right amount of money I'm with you guys - I'd do it too ;)
Great review! I've heard some good things about this one, and now I'm thinking I really need to pick it up.
That really sucks about the cover, though. The girl on it most definitely doesn't have olive skin.
I haven't been mistaken for anyone famous, but I might be tempted to impersonate one for the right amount of money ;)
Hey thanks for the heads up Ju! Not my genre but gotta check this one out :)
And to answer your question... hell, yeah!!
Wow! This book looks like so much fun. I have ALWAYS wanted to be a pop star for a day!! And I personally LOOOOVE the girl on the cover. I don't think it matters what color her skin is. She is beautiful, like a Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson type. I can't WAIT for it to come out!
