My summary: After having his Harley run off the road, Anders wakes up in the hospital to learn his girlfriend Olivia (the second occupant of the bike) has been hospitalized and is in a coma. When he rushes to her side, her estranged rich and powerful father refuses Ander's visits. Days later Olivia and her medical records mysteriously disappear from the hospital. What follows is a dramatic mystery that takes the reader from Florida to Connecticut and eventually even to Africa in search of answers, the truth, and Olivia.

My say: Julie Compton is a local girl, so I really wanted to love this book. However despite being well written, the characters never quite won me over. I was left wanting more from Anders and Olivia; more love, more connection, and more proof that the journey was worth my efforts.

My whodunit verdict: Whoa! This one was a mystery up to the very end. I enjoyed not knowing who was good, who was bad, and who was the evil mastermind behind it all.

My recommendation: Like the nitty-gritty mysteries you can share with your hubby? Check this one out.

My rating: 3 out of 5 stars; While I didn't love it, it is well written and kept me guessing.

My slices:
  • My favorite part: Rich and accurate Florida descriptions only a resident could truly describe.
  • My least favorite part: I really disliked Olivia. I found my self rooting for Ander's ex-girlfriend Shel.
My meter readings:
  • My kiddie-o-meter: Sex, infidelity, profanity, alcohol, illegal narcotics, domestic abuse, and mentions of rape make this one definitely best suited for older audiences.
  • My adult-o-meter: Adults who enjoy tough realistic mysteries will definitely dig this one.
My final say: This one was a bit too harsh for me. I am off to find something light.

I'm always so sad when I end up not loving books by local authors. :-(
This sounds like a book I might skip.

Interesting premise but it sucks that the characters weren't easy to connect with. Nice honest review!

Great review, as always! I have mixed thoughts on this book - I love the mystery aspect, but I'm not sure about the characters. I might read it if I see it anywhere!

Oh COOL! I'm planning on going to BEA this year.

Do you ever head north to Orlando?

Wouldn't it be cool if a group of us got together for the Harry Potter opening?!

I swear, I amaze myself with my brilliance. =D

Well, they keep saying "spring" but come on! Spring is like 2-3 months long... WHEN in spring? LOL

You know Disney has that $99 special now though... 4 parks/ 4 days for $99! Can't beat that!

Vanessa: Right? They keep pushing the date back. We'll have to keep our eyes peeled :)
