Heat Wave: Book Review Mini

Book: Heat Wave
Author: Richard Castle
Length: 196 (Hardcover)
Publisher: Hyperion
Released: September 2009
Genre: Mystery & Thriller | Police | Female Sleuth
Goodreads: Heat Wave
Available formats: Kindle, Hardcover, Paperback, Audio

My say: A fictional character writing about fictional characters? You bet! Heat Wave is like reading the script for a lost episode of Castle. The characters are the same, much of the dialog mirrors the show, but the view is from Castle's perspective and therefore Heat Wave is more gritty, blunt, and sexy.

Castle fans are sure to love:
Hearing inside the heads of their favorite characters.
Finally understanding all the references to Heat Wave.
But (most importantly) finally witnessing Nikki (Kate) and Rook (Castle) tackle each other and their undeniable attraction.

My only complaint is the writing style is a bit wordy and sometimes doesn't quite flow but the witty banter and the sexual tension are worth it.

My whodunit verdict: In true Castle style, the murder mystery unravels bit-by-bit and the mystery kept me guessing.

My star rating: 4 out of 5 stars; While I definitely think fans will enjoy it, non fans may not consider the book more than 3 stars.

Kiddie-o-meter: Heat Wave is edgy, brimming with sexuality, and slightly heavy on the curse words making it best reserved for older teens and adults.

My final say: Kate is infinitely softer and therefore more vulnerable and likable than Nikki. However, Nikki has the courage I wish Kate had. Speaking of courage...are any of you fans? Who do you think will finally have the courage to make the first move? Are you betting on Castle or Kate?

Heat Wave is my 5th entry in the Thriller & Suspense Reading Challenge hosted by Book Chick City.

  2. I knew that the show was on the air for a while now, but seriousley never thought I would like it. Now it's too late, they don't show it anymore... :(
    Thanks for the review!

  3. Castle=win
But I don't know if either of them will actually say anything. They're just stubborn like that.

  4. For a moment I thought you were kidding, when I saw Richard Castle as the author. I'm not a Castle fan, so I may give this a pass, but glad that you enjoyed it!

  5. I love castle I am so looking forward to reading this one. I think it will be kate to make the first move because that would be more intresting story line considering she is much more resurved. I think she will make the move and castle will end up hurting her somehow.. thats always the way it works.. then their jelious seeing the other person out and about intill finially they give in.

  6. Aths: LOL I know right? I honestly tried my best to find out who actually wrote the book but the entire book (even the dedication) is written in character.

  9. Yay, great review! I plan on reading this soon.. (like hopefully during my mini-version of this weekend's readathon). I've had it on TBR since I went out and bought it after seeing the ad for it after an episode, LOL!

I LOVE this show so I'm sure I'll love the book too. As for the first move, Kate for sure... I think it has to be her because right now everything is up to her... Castle would have already made it by now if she was okay with it, haha.

  12. I think it's such a smart move to have "Castle" write real books. Great tie-in for the show. I started watching from the first episode, but my BF didn't like it. So now whenever I try to put it on, he changes the channel. Gahhh! Men.

  13. Jenny: I'm with you. I'm think Kate will have to make the first move. ;)

An Almost Unschooling Mom: The show is cleaner than the book ;) Thanks for stopping by.

Kris: I think Castle is for girls. Every gal I've ever met that watches will usually tell me her husband doesn't dig it. Mr. Whimsy usually finds something else to do while it's on or grins and bears it. Try renting it from Netflix and then keeping up on Hulu.

I have a weird feeling that Kate will make the first move...but who knows.

  20. I'm a big fan of the show, but have been hesitant to pick the book up. Now I will definitely be buying it!

And I agree with the others - I think Kate will have to make the first move. Castle has already tried a couple times ;)

  21. I love that the character is the writer too that's awesome kind of makes you wonder but I bet its the script writer that wrote the book

  22. I love the show! I've been thinking about whether or not to get the book for a long time now. At 196 pages though, it's rather short, isn't it? For some reason, I also thought this book was out to make more money on top of this great show, so I'm still undecided about whether or not to read it. Oh well. Thanks for your mini review! =)

  23. I would have never guessed, but it's a logical progression. I really enjoy Castle, it's fun, simple, and the characters are a trip. Thnaks for recommendation. I'll have to check this out.
