Book: Across the Universe Authoress: Beth Revis
Pages: 398 (ARC paperback) Publisher: Razorbill/Penguin
Formats: eBook, Audio, Paperback, and Hardcover
Genre: YA, Dystopian, Mystery Goodreads: Across the Universe
Taglines: "What does it take to survive aboard a spaceship fueled by lies?" & "Across the Universe is Titanic meets Brave New World."
Premise: Godspeed (the ship of the future) is full of lies. In an effort to preserve human sanity, one man has become the keeper of the truth and therefore history. But one girl, released early from her icy slumber, is about to inadvertently change the course of the future by unleashing truth and discord.
2¢ Worth: Across the Universe is an exciting, enticing, and exhilarating ride. One full of mystery, tantalizing factors, and historical rewrites that will keep you guessing. I dare you to read this and not hang on until the very end! How else will you find out why the people aboard Godspeed believe Hitler was a good leader and love and emotion are a thing of the past?
Whodunit: Just when I thought I had the mystery figured out, the end threw me for a loop.
Writing: Beth Revis has a knack for details. From the very beginning she made me feel as though I too was waking from cryogenic sleep.
Wrapping: Despite the beauty of the cover, it alludes to more romance than the book truly holds. Is that a bad thing? Not in my book. I found it refreshing that they struggle with their attraction and don't immediately fall head over heels. I do LOVE the ship map on the inside cover and found my self referring to it several times.
Whippersnappers: While the main characters don't engage in anything scandalous, you will find many mentions to sex and nudity. There is also a slightly disturbing near rape scene.
Wholly: Across the Universe is a 5 star intergalactic dystopian mystery. Have you read it? Are you feeling Elder?

I am so more interested in this book when I saw that the cover has two faces on it...I did not before *headdesk*
ReplyDeleteI really want to read this. Not really my genre but so many good things have been said about it that I must read it. Great review!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I was so so happy with this book- absolutely thrilling!
ReplyDeleteTerrific review!
ReplyDeleteI just bought this one, and I can't wait to read it! Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI loved this book, too! Yes, that cryogenic sleep was intense - I felt it, too!
ReplyDeleteQuick thing - they are coming out with two covers!! One for the boys, one for the girls - the boy's cover is of the starship! So cool!
I know I am probably in the minority, but I was not blown away. I really liked the book, but, I was missing something. Maybe it was the love connection. I was not crazy about Elder. That being said, I would jump at the chance to read more. Great review.
ReplyDeleteI love all things speculative so I will be reading this!! Funny, I'm reading a sci-fi about humans stuck on a vessel-- very weird and matrix-y but I like it.
ReplyDeleteLesa: Me too! *high five* :) What are you reading?
ReplyDeleteElie: Thanks Elie :) Funny how one of my favorite things was one of your least fav :) Book love is in the eye of the beholder. Thanks for sharing your thoughts :) I'm on the fence about Elder too :)
Coffee and Book Chick: Really? I had no idea! Brilliant! :) I thought the cover would be two sided leaving the reader to choose :) No matter what I love how they are marketing this one.
Meredith: Hope you love it :)
Gina Hott: Thanks babe :)
NotNessie: *high five* Me too :)
Melissa: O I definitely think you should try it. Check back soon. I will be hosting a contest for my arc copy :)
Blod: *smile* Funny how that happens :) I'm such a sucker for a good cover!
Wonderful review! I loved the reversible cover, too. The map was so helpful in letting me get a picture of the ship in my head...because let's face it: I can read descriptions of space ships all day, but I never really understand until I have something to look at. :)
ReplyDeletePenny: Amen Penny! I lost count of how many times I revisited that map :)
ReplyDeletegreat review, juju! i'm so glad it lives up to the hype!
ReplyDeleteCarrie: It totally does :)
ReplyDeleteHey Juju, I'm an easy crier so yes I cried during the first chapter. Didn't you think it was so sad with Amy watching her parents get frozen and then making the decision herself. It totally sucked me into the story.
ReplyDeleteJenny N.: That was sad! It was hard for me when she found the empty case. :( So good. I feel so bad for her.
ReplyDeleteI loved it. I think your review perfectly nails the book - its strengths and intrigue. I found myself referring to the ship's map too. :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you enjoyed this one as well. I really liked it and felt it was so suspenseful! Great review!
ReplyDeleteOh, yay! It makes me excited that you were surprised by the whodunit because a lot of other reviews I read thought it was very obvious. I'm hoping it won't be obvious to me because I like a good mystery! And I tend to be very daft about those sorts of things anyways...
ReplyDeleteI love your new review format! It was so fun to read. :)
ReplyDeleteI feel like I understand the book better now too. I need to get my hands on a copy! Thanks juju!
I have yet to read it but my friend bought it two weeks ago and I'm planning on stealing it from her ;) I've heard that Amy and Elder's romantic relationship isn't the main focus and I'm kind of glad--the mystery aspect sounds way cooler.
ReplyDelete5 stars? Eek! I'm so excited! I've heard nothing but good things about this one. Can't wait to read it myself!
ReplyDeleteSo glad you loved this one too...and like you, I found myself checking out that map of the ship quite a few times, loved that it was there!!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the cover does kind of imply more of a romance, but no that doesn't bother me.
ReplyDeleteI love books that keep surprising you even when you think you got them figured out.
Can't wait to start this one.
Even tho' my TBR pile is too big for my life right now, you've made me interested in another book!
ReplyDeleteAwesome review, Juju! I love love love the sound of this, and I can't wait to actually pick it off my shelf and read it ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm reading this book right now - haven't finished it yet. My teaser tuesday post is this book. I'm enjoying it but the rape scene is graphic, but not too much.
ReplyDeleteLove the writing and the worldbuilding is fantastic.
I've read nothing but good about this book, I better make some time to read it.
ReplyDeleteOh wow, I'm so glad I have this one ready to be read on my pile! It sounds just amazing!
ReplyDeleteAs you know I loved this book! I feel the same on the cover. The book didn't have as much romance as the cover suggests. I also kept referring to the ship map. I was afraid with all the hype surrounding the book that it wouldn't live up to it. But it did. In so many ways and more!
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I really should get this one :)
ReplyDeleteOh your review (without spoilers...thank you) makes me anxious for my copy to arrive. *glances at TBR pile* Sounds like a great read even with the few unexpected and disturbing instances....
ReplyDeleteGMR: Yah :) You are going to love it :) And thank you! I try to always be spoiler free :)
ReplyDeleteAlek & Kaye: Yes do :)
Julie: I love when that happens :) Paranormalcy was like that for me. I was worried I wouldn't love it as much as the hype - but gleefully I did :)
Kay: So is :)
Mary: Yah! Agreed. I was reading it anxiously worried it would go too far, thank goodness it didn't. :)
Melissa & Natalie: Hope you love it :)
Renee Ann: Ahhhh the best compliment :)
Missie: Agreed! I love a suprise! :)
Vamp: Right? I found my self wishing all books did that ;)
Sandy: Do it do it :) Exactly! I like a little romance but I will choose mystery over it any day :)
Kim: Thanks doll :)
Aylee: Well just when I would think I knew who it was - something would happen that would leave me wondering if it was the other guy. :)
Christina: Agreed :) I adore suspense.
Shannon: Ah thanks sweetie!
I haven't read this yet, but I really want to! Glad you liked it, Juju. Now I'm even more anxious to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteJessicaBookLover: You're going to love it! :)

ReplyDeleteLOVED this book, and I'm glad you did too! :)
ReplyDeleteI *need* to add this on my birthday wishlist! Thanks for the awesome review, Juju. I didn't know that it has a MAP in the book, so that's a huge plus for me as... ahem... I am a map freak *lol*
ReplyDeleteJamie: Its soooooo good :)
ReplyDeleteLily: Right? So you digging Elder boy? :)
Shy: Reallly? I like maps. Mr. Whimsy loves them :)

ReplyDeleteTitanic? I'm so in! I've been pining for this a long time! I need to have it!
ReplyDeleteLizzy & Justine: Whoot whoot. I think you'll love it. Check back soon! I will be giving away my copy :)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this one too! One of the most interesting aspects for me was what you touched on with the skewed history where Hitler wasn't a monster and Lincoln shipped all the slaves back to Africa instead of abolishing slavery.
ReplyDeleteJenny: OMG yes! The historical part really upset me. I was like, "Holy crap. She better remember her history so she can set everything straight."
ReplyDeletei like the sound of "5 star intergalactic dystopian mystery". definitely adding it to my wishlist now! thanks for the amazing review of it. this one almost slipped under my radar.
ReplyDeleteToothy: Ahhh thanks :D
ReplyDeleteI absolutely can't wait to check this one out.. I won a copy in a contest (yay!) and it should be arriving next week. Your review has made me anticipate it even more!
ReplyDeleteOh my! I have this one sitting in my TBR pile, picked it up a couple of weeks ago and then set it back down because I got busy and heard a couple of not great things. Your review reminds me I need to think for myself and just read the book! Fabulous review, of course! And thank you for knocking some sense into me. ;o)
ReplyDeleteAshley: Oooo you are going to love it! :) Thanks for visiting!
ReplyDelete1stdaughter: Thank you darling :) I hope you pick this up. I found that the author's attention to details gripped me from the very beginning.
I used to be a space opera fan until about 5 years ago when I shifted to urban fantasy... but I may still have a bit of my space opera geek in me because you make this book really really attractive to read :)
ReplyDeleteCherry: Space Opera? I like so love that term! :)
