Wee-view: Elixir

2¢ Worth: The first twenty pages of Elixir are slow. But then it evolves into mysterious dreams of reincarnation with a gorgeous strange Jason Bourne like hottie that spirals into an exciting race to unravel the Shakespearean like tragedy that is Clea, Sage, and Ben. The writing is at times awkward but the story and the tangled weave of deciphering the truth from fiction and the past from the present is excellent. Overall, Hilary needs to evolve a bit as a writer but she scores mega points with me on concept. The result is a nail biting, 3 star read with a mega cliffhanger.

Whippersnappers: Expect sex and murder.

Wrapping: While the floral cover is pretty, this one fits the story better, holds an air of mystery, and manages a little foreshadowing.

  3. I wasn't at all interested in this book until you mentioned a Jason Bourne like hottie! LOL

I like the new cover better too.

  4. I've been curious about this one! Any book with a Jason Bourne type character is one I'd like to read despite my dislike for cliffhangers!

  7. At first glance, I thought that was Hilary Duff on the cover of her own book. lol

    Great review, Juju!

  12. ooh nice. I want to read this one, but I will wait till the sequal comes out! ;) Cliffhangers are really not my thing. ;)

  14. Agreed, I like this cover better. I was really wondering about this novel only because Hilary Duff wrote it. I'm a Hilary Duff fan, but I couldn't imagine that she is a very good writer. However, I could be totally wrong on that front. It sounds like one I should pick up from the library.

  15. Jen: I'm a fan of her music too. Totally try it from the library but remember to bear with the beginning. :)

  16. This is another one I've wondered about. I'm absolutely not a fan of acting/singing stars turning to write. I think most of the time it comes out contrived and pushed, especially if that person isn't much of a reader/writer to begin with. It sounds like this may fall into that category as well. I really like the premise, but yeah...I probably wouldn't pick it up based on the author alone. I think I'll stick with her music and let this one stay put. Great review though! ;o)

  17. heh, been wondering about this one... I think it's fine that she has room for improvement when it comes to her writing. Perhaps she'll get there someday.

  18. the cover is a little mysterious.

  19. Blod: Thanks :)

Danielle Angel: I feel ya doll :) Perhaps the audio of this one would be better. That way you get the concept and not the less than perfect writing.

    Aylee: Exactly :)

Kaye: Yah it works in perfect with that cool concept I mentioned.

  21. I've been wondering about this one, too. Glad I didn't buy at the bookstore the other day...but will consider getting it at the library. The story sounds interesting. I like the cover. Do you think she really wrote it or had a ghost writer? I always wonder if a celebrity actually sat down and wrote a novel or if their ideas, input and names were just used.

  22. Gina Precious: :)

Julie: Right on. My guess: I think she cowrote it with someone. A good point. I always wonder that too. :)

  23. I have been hesitant to read a book written by singing and dancing Disney star, but what the heck...guess I'll give it a try :)

  24. I have this one on my shelf but for some reason I keep passing it up. I am glad that you enjoyed the concept even though the writing was so-so. I am very interested in picking this one up now. =D

  28. I'm still not sure whether I should read this one or not as I've always stayed away from books written by celebrities.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I think I have yet to read any books by celebrities (i.e. Lauren Conrad...). But it looks like I may need to consider picking this one out! And I definitely agree that this cover suits the story better. The old one was just pure eye candy, haha. ;)

  30. I like this cover a lot more than the floral one. I saw it today at Borders so it's interesting that I saw your review the same day as well :) I'm REALLY curious about the concept now.

  31. Major cliffhanger? I'm definitely skipping this one then. I really don't like those cliffhangers. I feel like the author is attempting to force me to read his/her follow up.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Cliffhanger? Ouch!! Don't like cliffhangers :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. I also thought the concept was great. The writing could be better, but it wasn't even that bad :)

  34. Really? Well I like her the most out of all the child/teen/ celebs so I'll try it. Thanks darling :)

  37. Every time I come across a post of yours I am excited to comment on, I am always somewhere in the 50s. Good heavens! You're a popular one, darling!

I am very happy you liked the book. See what I mean that it wasn't horrible, but kind of interesting though it needed some work. (and really, WHAT ABOUT HER FATHER!? That still bugs me..)

  38. I've put off this one because I've heard horrid things about Hilary using a ghostwriter and failing to give said ghostwriter credit, but the premise is intriguing. Great review :)

  44. I've always been a bit intrigued over this one! But I'm happy that unlike, Lauren Conrad, who seems to just fictionalize her experiences, Hilary actually creates an interesting sounding story!
