Audiobook Review: Anna Dressed in Blood

2¢ Worth: Anna Dressed in Blood is practically impossible to turn off. When I was tisking or clucking my tongue, I was listening stock still and/or slack jawed. It was incredibly easy to get sucked into Cas the Ghost Slayer's twisted life of killing ghosts. Kendare manages to suck you in and make you feel bad for a monster. That takes skill. Then she holds you captive with danger, death, and palpable excitement in the air. This was definitely a step out of my book comfort zone that I'm glad I took. I can not wait to get my ears on the next audiobook. Hey AudioGo, pleeease hurry up.

Words aloud: August Ross has a slow, deliberate, almost breathy narration style that took me a bit to get use to. That being said, the tone and pace felt right for Cas. August also really impressed me with his accents.

Wooed:
  • The male POV felt authentic.
  • I like that just when I thought I knew where the story was going, it through me for a loop and took off.
Wrapper: The eerie cover is spot on! The dress, her hair, and the house are all in the story and perfectly illustrated.

Warning: If you're a giant chicken like me, do not listen to this one at night.

Whippersnappers: Plenty of profanity, death, ghosts, witchcraft, voodoo, and tortured souls make this something I would recommend to older teens or adults.

Wire tip: Thank you AudioGo and AudioBookSync.com. I scored this audio for FREE at AudioBookSync.com. Each week this summer they are giving away 2 audiobooks. You're still in time to jump in.

Wind-up: Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake (published by AudioGo) is read by August Ross and is 8 hours and 43 minutes long. Audiobook rating: 5 stars. Narrator rating: 4 stars.

I know you like to read witchy things then and it's a bit scary and has a few witches in it.

  6. You make me want to listen to this book. If I read a strong review of an audio book here, will that translate into a good read as well? Do you think some of the audios are made great with the excellent narration to the point that they would not be a good read?

    1. Good question.
      :)

Sometimes I would say the answer would probably be yes.
Other times I think the answer is definitely no.
      Listening is a unique experience.
And certain narrators take it to another level.
So it depends on the book.

In this case, I say it's probably a fab book that is much scarier when read in print.

      Thanks for asking.

Not sure if I'll get it as an audiobook...but since my commute is about to become an hour and 15 minutes one way I'm probably going to need them :)

  16. Oh! I'm so glad you reviewed this one so quickly, I almost forgot to go pick up this week's offering. Also, love this review! This is a book I've wanted to read for awhile and haven't had the chance to, but I was excited to see the audiobook up for free. Now I'm wondering when to listen, because I probably can't listen with kiddos around but the night hours sound like this one may creep me out a bit. lol We shall see. ;o)

  17. So glad you enjoyed this one, Juju! This was one of the more intriguing books I read last fall and it took me by surprise. Completely agree about the male POV seeming authentic.

Also, glad to hear that the narrator did a good job. I'll have to start listening to it soon, especially since you've made me curious about his accents :)

    Lovely review!

  20. Hahaha! I like that you caution against listening to it late at night. I'm rather a chicken when it comes to stuff like this, so thanks for the warning! Sounds intriguing and perfect for heading into autumn and reading by the fire. :0)

  25. I just started listening to this one yesterday. I'm not quite sucked in yet...seems a slow start and coming off Gerard Doyle I know it will be hard for any narrator to compare. After reading this though I'm confident it will pick up:)

    1. Yay!
Yeah it took me a minute to get sucked in too.
It's that slow deliberate type of narration I think.

      Have you met Anna yet?

I haven't tried Gerard Doyle! Which one do you recommend?

    2. I haven't met Anna yet...so I know I've not yet gotten to the good stuff!

I just finished listening to the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini (narrated by Gerard Doyle) I had actually read the 1st in the series Eragon ages ago and then finally this year decided to listen to books 2-4 on audio. So glad that I did! I never thought I'd find a narrator I liked better than Jim Dale but Gerard Doyle is it! I can not express how much I love him. This series is epic with a million characters of all different species and genres and he is amazing with not only the voices but the tones as well. You can feel the emotion.

I just downloaded the 1st of another series that he narrates (I don't even remember what it was...nothing I'd ever heard of but I am sure it will be awesome!)

PS. I think this is the right link to a youtube video of Paolini and Doyle discussing the series: http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=5&ved=0CIABEBYwBA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DXGswnEUdXHM&ei=CQwYUPq4OI6GrAfU8oC4Cw&usg=AFQjCNEhPfTmFq3scqpW6EYCzB5DMil5Ow

PPS. Sorry for the ramble...but I swear he deserves it!

    3. Oh wow. I've never gotten around to reading those. I always meant to.
Sounds like I must must must try the audio. Thank you for the brilliant recommendation and video.

I am SO adding it to my TBL.

And please my darling, never feel as you are rambling. I loved every minute of it and love reading people's passionate feelings for different narrators.

Side note: I love that he calls himself "the vessel" in the beginning of that video.

  37. Nice! I'm glad you liked it. This one's a book I have on my book shelf in physical form. I won it in a contest but haven't made the time to read it yet. How cool you scored it for free. I just found out about the free audiobooks. I'm sort of late to the game, but better late than never. After reading your review I really want to make some time to read this, just wish I had it in ebook or audio though, makes it so much easier for me to get to.

So why is eBook easier than physical? I'm curious :)

I'm so sorry you didn't hear of the free audios earlier. I would've announced it here but I saw it in so many places in Blogland that I was afraid of being repetitive. Next year I pronounce I will help spread the word.
