Adieu Maeve
As a teen, my very favorite literary character was Benny Hogan of the Circle of Friends. The chubby beautiful brave Benny. So it stung today to hear of Maeve Binchy's passing. This is my moment of silence for her. Won't you join me?
I haven't tried her latest (Minding Frankie) but I hear it's great. I of course have a soft spot for Circle of Friends. For you I would recommend Light a Penny Candle. It's sweet, nostalgic, and about the kind of friendships that last a life time.
It's wonderful when we are blessed with someone who shares such a beautiful, gift with the rest of us, and I don't know of any better a gift then that of a book that transports us to another place. Thank you for sharing,
I loved Circle of Friends. I haven't read any of her other books though I'd always meant to. It was sad and surprising to hear of her passing. I was also sad to hear about the recent passing of Donald Sobol of Encyclopedia Brown fame and Else Minarik who wrote the Little Bear books.
Mourn, I will. I don't even remember the Maeve Binchy book that I read, but only that it totally sucked me in and was quite satisfying. God rest her soul.
Clearly my life is lacking, because I've never read anything by her! We've lost some great authors this year, Maurice Sendak and Else Minarik in particular. They basically shaped my childhood.
Circle of Friends is and always will be one of my beloved favorites! Thank you for recognizing Maeve Binchy's passing, and allowing us to share the grief together.
Circle of Friends was one of my favorite movies, but I never read the book. Now I'll have to. Haven't thought of it in forever...thanks for the memory. :0)
I know! It's so sad. I absolutely LOVED Benny as well. I remember reading Circle of Friends one summer at the beach when I was much younger and I devoured it. It was so good! She will be missed. :(
Oh no! This is so sad! How I loved this book and the movie. Now I feel like I have to go read it again, it's been ages.
I was coming over to say hello and to let you know how much I appreciated your kind words today at my bloggy, and to also tell you how enchanting YOURS is! I feel like I've discovered a candy confection of literary goodness. :)
Oh my darling, now it is you that has made my day. "Candy confection of literary goodness" Wow. Be still my heart. Best compliment ever. Thank you :) Your blog is so precious. I can't wait until my little girl is old enough to enjoy it with me.
I was so shocked and sad to hear that she'd passed. She was one of my favorites---I absolutely loved Circle of Friends, Glass Lake, Evening Class, Echoes, Nights of Rain and Stars...so many incredible stories and characters. Maeve Binchy will definitely be missed. Thanks for posting this, Juju.
I was shocked when I heard the news yesterday. RIP Maeve Binchy.
