2¢ Worth: Ida B ...and Her Plans to Maximize Fun, Avoid Disaster, and (Possibly) Save the World is full of charm, wit, and imagination. It's the story of a young girl who has a seemingly perfect life until some trouble blows in and spins Ida B down a road of confusion, fear, and anger. For awhile delightful buoyant Ida B lets all that darkness turn her heart dark too. The story is descriptive, earnest, and bittersweet. Ida B's way of thinking made me smile, hurt when she hurt, wish I could hug her, explain things for her, and make things better. I adore this audio. So much so that I could see myself listening to it again and again. I almost never say that.Words aloud: Lili Taylor is absolutely fantastic. Seriously. An instant fav that in my mind puts her on par with Neil Gaiman. There is something so thoughtful about her voice that lends it self perfectly to this precocious little girl who speaks to trees and brooks. There is a line from the book that I will never forget because it's just soooo true about good narrators and just so true about Lili Taylor. Here is Ida B reflecting on reading aloud.
..."That magic that happens when you tell a story right and everybody who hears it not only loves the story, but they love you a little bit too for telling it so well."Word to the wise: So if you must read it, please by all means do. I'm sure it's delightful. BUT I reallly can not recommend the audio version enough.
Wrinkle: The ending is good and has closure but I would have loved an epilogue.
Wooed: I'm a list maker so I loved that about Ida B.
Whippersnappers: Clean.
Wind-up: Ida B ...and Her Plans to Maximize Fun, Avoid Disaster, and (Possibly) Save the World by Katherine Hannigan (published by Listening Library) is read by Lili Taylor and consists of 3 discs (3 hours and 14 minutes). Audiobook rating: 5 stars. Narrator rating: 5 stars.

A giant thank you to Sunlit Pages for recommending this one.

?Wow sounds great! Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteI don't usually do Audio books unless I am traveling. But I will add this to my list.
Yay :)
DeleteA great narrator can really enhance a book. Ida sounds like a fabulous character!
ReplyDeleteShe really is :)
DeleteAwww... i want to read about a girl who speaks to trees and brooks! Going on my wishlist!
ReplyDeleteRight? I loved that about her.
DeleteThis is a new-to-me author, book and reader... gotta go and have a nosey about it :)
ReplyDeleteI love that expression :)
DeleteGreat review and another lili taylor fan. Must check out this book.
ReplyDelete:) Its fab and something your girls would love too.
DeleteSounds lovely! I love when books move you into the story.
ReplyDeleteYesss :)
DeleteThis one sounds so delightful! The title is also quirky.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it? I love it.
DeleteIt sounds adorable! I'll be on the lookout for the audio version.
ReplyDeleteYay :)
DeleteAw this sounds like a fun read! Definitely one to keep in mind for the commute
ReplyDelete:) And it's only 3+ hours long.
DeleteNice and short. Sadly my daily commute is now two hours, so I'd finish it pretty quickly (and then I could start a new one hey)
DeleteYes exactly! Less daunting than the average 10-18 hour commitment some audios are. ;)
DeleteYou're going to throw the double 5-star rating out there, are you? You're going to go there? You are not doing my TBR pile any favors, Juju. It's supposed to be fighting the bulge and slimming down.
ReplyDeleteHa ;) You made me smile. This is one I pretty sure you would love too.
DeleteThis one is really short - only 3hrs - I'm curious to read it, or maybe even listen to it if I can find me a library copy. Great review. I'm so happy you are enjoying/reviewing audios. I love to read your reviews.
ReplyDeleteAwww thank you! :) I really am loving it. And I really think you will like this one. You and I share that soft spot for MGs.
DeleteI'm so, so glad you loved this one! I couldn't agree more about the narrator. One of my friends read this book soon after I did, and she didn't love it nearly as much as I did. I really think it's because she didn't listen to it. Sometimes that can make or break a book, and in this case, the narration is so utterly fantastic that I really think it is a must!
ReplyDeleteYes! Excellent point. There's just something about Lili as Ida B. Exactly. Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for recommending it. My only complaint is I loved her narration so much that I ran out trying to find more books she's narrated and couldn't find any. :(
DeleteSounds like a fun read! Thanks for another great review!
ReplyDeleteThank you sweetie for coming by :)
DeleteOoooh, sounds amazing! Glad you enjoyed it that much! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
DeleteI will have to get this one! Oh this just sounds delightful :)
ReplyDeleteTruly :) Ida B goes through some darkness but through the entire thing she's rather charming with her tenacious spirit.
DeleteI've been looking at this and wondered if I'd like it. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteNo prob :) I think you will.
DeleteThis sounds like a book I would absolutely adore. And I like your thoughts on the audiobook version...voice makes SO much difference. I'm excited to listen to it! I'll request it from my library. :)
ReplyDeleteIt SO does. :) I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it.
DeleteSounds wonderful! I know it's a big seller at Blue Willow Book Shop!
ReplyDeleteReally? How awesome. I love hearing that.
DeleteI really need to give audiobooks a try, I've never listened to one and it seems like such a different way to experience the book. Now, I just need to find some time as listening takes so much longer than reading!
ReplyDeleteStart with a short one like this one.
DeleteLong is daunting.
Something you can pop in the next time you're running errands.
Before you know it, you'll be making excuses to run errands, cut grass, or do laundry so you can finish. ;)
Wonderful review Juju! I've had this 1 of my TBR list for quite a while... Looks like I may have to break it out of it's bookish prison. ^_^ (Love the quote shared as well...very true.)
ReplyDeleteYes you do ;)
Delete"Bookish prison"? Ha! I love that!
What a cool title and Ida B. sounds like such fun. I'm intrigued by her trials and am liking her thoughtful ways. And the quote is so true and so awesome. I'll definitely have to try this one out one day.
ReplyDeleteRight? :) Yay! I am SO glad to hear that.
DeleteThis sounds truly wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIt really is :)
DeleteThis sounds super cute! Books and trees? And an audiobook that's just 3 hours with a great narrator? SOLD.
ReplyDeleteWendy @ The Midnight Garden
Yay!!!! :)
DeleteWow! That is some high praise girly! I might just have to break down and listen to it. But I think I will look for the book first! Thanks for the great review.
ReplyDelete~Liz
Wahooo! :) Thanks for popping by.
DeleteSounds adorable! Thanks for the review!! I'm glad you are still able to listen to e-books even while you're so busy with your new baby :)
ReplyDeleteaudio books, not ebooks :)
DeleteI understand and thank you :) Audios have been a Godsend for me.
Delete:D I loved reading this book. My daughter had to read it in the 6th grade for an English paper and I read it after her.....:) LOL sometimes I think I enjoy the kids books more than they do.
ReplyDeleteOh awesome!
DeleteI love that it's required in school.
That makes me smile on the inside too.
And regarding your last comment, I know I do. ;)
i haven't heard of this one but i like the title. cute!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't either before Sunlit Pages mentioned it to me :)
DeleteAwww, poor Ida B. I want to hug her now too, and I don't even know the details. Growing up is just too darn hard sometimes :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it? :)
