Audiobook Review: On the Island

Words aloud: This is one of those audios I would not recommend to audio novices. The narrator speaks clear and has a great tone of voice but she reads way too quickly for my taste. I kept wanting her to slow down and feel the words more. Especially the sexy, tender, or romantic parts. I tried to slow down the speed but something must be wrong with the audio quality because when in slow mode it has a bad echo. Plus, I would have looooooved a male voice for the T.J. chapters. With all that being said, I pushed on because Anna and T.J.'s connection and romance was hard to turn away from.

2¢ Worth: We've all at some point watched or read some story with a couple on a deserted island falling in love. Blue Lagoon, Swept Away, and even Lost. But what happens when the chick is in her 30s and the guy is like 16? Can they fight it? As the months turn into years, will she still be able to say no? Will she want to say no? How will they survive? And if they are ever rescued, does their love stand a chance? Will the age difference matter then? How could it not? That and then some is tackled and answered. The result is part story of survival and part love story. I liked watching their attraction slowly increase over time. I marveled at their trials and determination to survive. I gasped, sighed, and clapped for these two. Their journey isn't easy but it is worth it and pretty well written.

Word to wise: Need a good end of the summer read? Try this one. But stick to the print version.

What's what: Check out the author's recent blog post at Tracey Garvis Graves.com to see how she imagines T.J. & Anna.

Whippersnappers: This romantic tale isn't erotic but is sexually frank. There is desire, attraction, mentions of masturbation, sex, profanity, some underage alcohol consumption, and one minor drug use.

Wind-up: On the Island by Tracey Garvis Graves (published by the author) is read by Heidi Baker and is 7 hours and 3 minutes long. Audiobook rating: 4 stars. Narrator rating: 2 stars.

Thank you Tina's Book Reviews for bringing this book to my attention with her awesome list of The Best Summer Reads.

  2. Oh, I had no idea this was what the story was about. It actually sounds REALLY good! I like the idea of the age difference tossed in with being abandoned on a desert island. Sorry the audio didn't work so well for you. I"m listening to a reader who I feel the direct opposite, I want her to SPEED up! Guess you can't please everyone huh? I think I'm going to take your advice and go with reading this one instead of audio. So is this one adult fiction, I'm hunching it is.... PS great review, you had all the essential parts.

    1. Ha! Yup it goes both ways doesn't it? :) I've been in both situations.

      Who/what are you listening to?

      It is Adult Fiction. :)

      Thanks sugar!

    2. I'm listening to a book called Numbers by Rachel Ward. It's set in London, England and the reader has a strong English accent. I can't believe how slow she reads, but I'm addicted to her accent. The book doesn't have rave reviews. I'm not sure why, it's won many literary awards. So far I'm really enjoying it. Lots of curse words though.

    3. Oh yes! (I had to look it up to remember it)
I sampled it and I looove her accent too but she takes pauses after every few lines it seems.
So I can totally understand what you're saying.
I can't wait for your review.
      :)

  3. Interesting premise for this one - I'm not sure it appeals to me (but then again, I'm not sure it doesn't, either). I'll have to think about it! Thanks for sharing your review!

  5. This never fails to be an interesting premise to me. I think I first became fascinated when that teacher fell in love with her 14 year old boy student and went on to have 2 children with him (while being in jail). I should find out what happened to them.

  12. I read the print version and absolutely loved it! It's interesting to see that you were able to put aside the fact that the audio version wasn't what you expected, but were able to appreciate the actual story for what it was. :) Nothing worse that they way someone reads and audiobook to ruin someones experience.

    Great review!

  16. I'm thinking this isn't exactly my cup of tea. From the narration to the premise, it's not something I think I could wrap my head around. But you did an amazing job with the review! ;o)

  19. It is interesting how narrators can make a difference when it comes to enjoying a story. I don't think I'll be picking this one up in print either though. I don't think I could overcome the whole age difference thing.

    1. Oh absolutely. And the writer keeps it pretty legit but I totally understand :)

  20. I keep seeing rave reviews for this book, but I'm another one of those who just can't bring myself to get over the age difference. It absolutely creeps me out. My loss, I guess.

    1. Well if it's of any assistance, things don't really "go there" till he's legit ;)

      But I totallly understand.

  21. Hmm... that wouldn't be enjoyable if the reading of the novel was too fast - it would make it hard to decipher everything. It's one thing if the reader wants to speed read but quite another if you are trying to listen to speed reading. :-) Think I'll skip this one... thanks so much for the review, Juju!

That cover art sure is pretty though!

    1. Yes. Exactly. I kept pausing and mentally catching up.

Thank you sugar for popping by.

      It is beautiful isn't it?

  22. Well for me a narrator really can make or break the book. I think I'll skip this one but thank you for being honest.

  23. Well first off, audio books just aren't my cup of tea so thanks for the note on "not for novices" just in case I was tempted. Honestly though, I'm torn on this one story wise. Can't quite say yes...thanks for the honest glimpse though!

  24. Print version for me for sure! This premise seems especially intriguing right now with so many real life situations concerning this age difference and love scenario. I would love to understand and believe in such a love so I'll have to check this out.

  25. Oh, so happy to hear you enjoyed this one. I've been hesitant about it, but the fact that the book is more sexually frank than erotic might just have convinced me to give it a chance (I'm comfortable with sexuality in books, but rarely erotic scenes do work for me!) Great review!
