CBS Sunday Morning Talks Snow White and the New Breed of Fairytale Princesses

"Fairy tale princesses have come a long way, baby, and it's nowhere more obvious than in "Snow White & the Huntsman."
This morning CBS Sunday Morning did an excellent 3:33 piece on Snow White and the Huntsman.
"A friend recently showed her daughter the wonderful mock fairy tale "The Princess Bride," from 1987, and the little girl was horrified when the hero and heroine were attacked by a giant rat. It's not that it was violent. It's that the princess didn't pick up a sword. What's the matter with her? Does she expect to be, like, RESCUED?"
Good right? Click here to read and watch David Edelstein's "Snow White No Disney Fairy Tale". It's a short, clever, and interesting commentary, comparison, and review.

Eureka! Litographs

Grab your pocketbooks ladies 'cause what I'm about to show you is not only lovely and perfect for any reader, but it's affordable! The website is called Litographs.com and they sell lithographs made of the text from the book. Thus, the term litographs. Get it? Cute and seriously cool right? Below is an example of the Moby Dick and Alice prints with a zoom in on the words.

They come in your choice of pretty muted colors (like above) or black and white. So check them out! So far I can't decide which one is my favorite and I can't wait to see what the Mary Poppins print will look like (due out next month).

Well Said: Wondering

"He reads histories and mythologies and fairy tales, wondering why it seems that only girls are ever swept away from their mundane lives..."
- The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Good question isn't it? The Night Circus audio book has been enchanting me thus far. How is your current book treating you?

Garmann's Secret

2¢ Worth: Garmann's Secret is unlike any kid's book I have ever read. The art is funky, bright, detailed, and has a distinct cut and paste collage feel. But what makes it unique is the way the story and the art coalesce. In the story a boy and a girl, through their secret hideout, explore their friendship. Over time that friendship buds into a sweet romance. Which leads me to this coalescence I mentioned. I noticed that as the story progressed, the girl became prettier. Kids will probably miss this message. But to me it was a subtle hidden Easter egg for the adults. Reminding us that loves makes us see things sweeter.

Whippersnappers: There is a kiss and the book does mildly address bullying.

Wind-up:
Garmann's Secret
(written and illustrated by Stian Hole, published by Eerdmans Books for Young Readers, and available as a 11.5 x 9.4 inches hardcover) is a fun coming of age story with a My Girl feel. 4 stars
