White Cat is so good. So good it's easy to forget the voice piping through your speakers isn't actually Cassel. That you're not actually listening to a betrayed boy trying to do the right thing in a family of twisted unscrupulous criminals. This story is a fantastically knotted mess of deception fraught with mystery. But perhaps the best part is Black's intricate weaving of reality and fiction. Try it if you like you like your supernatural stories to feel real and keep you guessing.
Whippersnappers: There is no sex or profanity but it does feel unapologetically mature and has mentions to murder.
Wind-up: White Cat is written by Holly Black, narrated by Jesse Eisenberg, and is 6 hours and 41 minutes long. The first 2 1/2 hours builds, but after that it's pretty hard to walk away. Audiobook rating: 4 stars. Narrator rating: 5 stars.

This sounds like a terrific read/listen. How is the Whimsy Family celebration of the New Year coming along? Hugs to that Baby Whimsy from me :)
ReplyDeleteWe're doing great.
DeleteThough I still need lanterns.
I'm going to get some this week.
I really need to reread this book so I can finish the rest of the series! I remember really enjoying it when it first came out!
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteThis sounds amazing. I have heard so many great things about this book and author. Need to add this to my to-read list. Thanks so much for sharing! :)
ReplyDeletePlease do :)
DeleteI love it when a book is narrated so well you feel like it's really the character speaking to you!
ReplyDeleteYes. And you have to remind yourself they are not one in the same.
DeleteHappy new year www.adoramehitabel.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLovely blog btw darling.
DeleteYou're face reminds me of a thinner Adele.
I btw adore Adele.
Your Dr Martens rock.
I've heard good things about this book and I have even met Holly Black at a signing once...I'll have to check this out!
ReplyDeleteReally? Too cool!
DeleteI've been waiting for this book to hit the cheap secondhand market... am still waiting *sigh*
ReplyDeleteAwww boooo. Hurry up secondhand market.
DeleteI completely need to read this book- it is on my TBR for this year but I fear I still may not get to it...I SIMPLY MUST! x
ReplyDeleteYes :)
DeleteI love this series and still need to finish it :)
ReplyDeleteMe too :)
DeleteWow, will have to check this out!
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteAlas, when I read this one it just didn't click with me. Perhaps the audiobook might help me connect more with the world!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking so. I'm thinking it helps bring Cass to life.
DeleteJesse Eisenberg, the actor? I might need to check out the audiobook! Sounds like an intense and awesome read!
ReplyDeleteYes. He narrates. Who knew right? :)
DeleteI can't even tell you how long I have had this on my Kndle...I really need to just read it!
ReplyDeleteDo it ;)
DeleteAh! I agree Jesse Eisenberg is Cassel! Also it does feel a bit adultish. I think it's the crime families.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it? You're right. It's probably the crime thing. Plus, I don't think the poor guy really got to have a normal childhood.
DeleteSounds like they did an AWESOME job translating this one from written wonder to spoken word. Good deal! Thanks for sharing! ^_^
ReplyDeleteThank you for popping by :)
DeleteI've never really been a fan of audiobooks, but I love that you thought the voice coming through your speakers was the main character. I've been wanting to start this series so I think I'm going to do it audiobook-style! :) Thanks Juju!
ReplyDeleteWhat? Whooot whooot! I hope you do!
DeleteI real;ly enjoyed this audio as well...though for some reason I've not picked up the next in the series... I think I listened to it at the end of 2011? I'm too lazy to go check. I'll be curious to see what you think of Red Glove...maybe it will spur me on to finish the series...
ReplyDeleteYes! Me too. But Lily just convinced me to grab it.
DeleteI've heard nothing but good things about this series Juju, I really need to make time for it. I even have this book on my shelf and I've yet to read it. *hangs head in shame*
ReplyDeleteSooooo been there before :)
DeleteI hope you decide to check it out.
Intriguing! Sounds like it keeps you wondering! :)

Sounds pretty awesome! I remember seeing another glowing review for this one somewhere else so I'll have to check this one out someday.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely :)
DeleteYES, I thought Jesse Eisenberg made the perfect Cassel! I was so impressed because I remember being really unsure whether or not it was going to work with him as narrator.
ReplyDeleteI just looked him up and ooooo you're right. I can totally see why you might have thought that. :)
DeleteI LOVED this book! The sequel is even better! I've had the final book, but it's been on the shelf since its release! Your post was a great reminder to pick it up! :)
ReplyDeleteRealllly? Ok! I'm going to grab it asap.
DeleteSo glad we inspired each other. :)
OOOH and it is in audio - always a plus for my busy schedule!
ReplyDeleteAmen sister!
Deletesounds good.
ReplyDeleteI read Holly Black's books before, and while the stories were interesting, I'm a bit hesitant with the writing. But I think I might try this series this year!
ReplyDeleteI think I tried one and didn't like it either. This one really impressed me though so yah perhaps this would be a better fit. :)
DeleteGlad you enjoyed this one! I've been meaning to reread so I can finish the trilogy...it sounds like I should check out the audio version!
ReplyDeleteGood call :)
DeleteI just read this series and it was just meh for me. I wonder if the audio would have been better. Some books come to life better with audio.
ReplyDeleteOh really? I personally really liked what the narrator gave Cass so perhaps so. :)
DeleteSo glad you liked this book! I loved the slow build of the con, and then trying to unravel the twisty ins and outs. Black has a scary/awesome mind. Yay!
ReplyDeleteYes! Me too! She sure does.
DeleteOkay, so this one is officially on my 2013 Reading List. I just read another blogger's review and she was completely cray-cray about it too. Yay!
ReplyDeleteCray cray! Man I love that expression.
DeleteSo glad you added it to your list.
Ooh this sounds good!
ReplyDeleteWow you are just tossing curve balls left and right. I wouldn't have thought you'd read this series either. You may have even convinced me to pick up the series, too. Nice job!
ReplyDeleteYou're right I am aren't I? ;)
DeleteThank you :D
You left me beaming.
I am in love with this series. It was just so good. I will have to try the audio one day.
ReplyDeleteO girl I think you would love it.
DeleteI don't have this in audio, but have had the book sitting on my shelf for too long. I will have to crack it open!
ReplyDeleteO yes do :)
DeleteThe cover for this one gives me delightful shivers! :)
ReplyDelete:)
DeleteI had this book on audio but never got around to it before it expired. I'm going to have to go check it out again.
ReplyDeleteOh bummer. I hope you do :)
