One of my favorite audiobooks of the 2012, also happens to be one of the audiobooks I never reviewed. Shame on me! Because Stories I Only Tell My Friends is a fantastic audiobook that I truly believe was meant to be an audio. In almost confessional format that made me feel like I was sitting at the bar having beers with Rob, the actor and writer recounts his life from the moment he knew he wanted to be an actor. He covers growing up in TV/movie industry, the highs and lows of fame, losing his virginity, the "innocent excess of the eighties", how the Brat Pack came to be, his brushes with other 80s royalty, his experiences with political campaigning, meeting his wife, and becoming a father. He offers insight on the filming of The Outsiders, Class, Youngblood, St. Elmo's Fire, About Last Night, Wayne's World, Saturday Night Live, and The West Wing. He's charming, funny, eloquent, earnest, and smart. He overcomes hardships, the nasty side of the industry, and even alcoholism His life is a wild charmed "full of circumstance" life that will have you laughing, oohing, awwing, and even gasping. He names so many people that you would think it sound like name dropping but it never does. It's a terrific fluid voyage full of unexpected twists and turns. The ending is truly satisfying. Stories I Only Tell My Friends helped me see and understand the eighties the way Lucy in the Sky helped me experience the late sixties. Thank you Rob. It may sound silly but after listening to your audiobook, I feel like we're friends now.
Words aloud: I know you're thinking of course he's a good narrator, it's his life after all. However, I must insist that it's more than that. Rob doesn't just voice the people he's talking about - he mimics them and his impersonations are some of the best I have everrrr heard. Rob's narration is stellar and effortless.
Word to the wise: If you get the chance to listen to this book, take it. If you need an audio for you and your mister during your next road trip, grab this one. If a nonbookie needs an audio, suggest this one. This audiobook deserves the hype and then some. It feels like a real conversation. One you don't want to rush or let end.
Warning: Be forewarned, if you weren't a fan of Rob's before you will be after you listen to this. Even Mr. Whimsy is now.
Wooed: My favorite events involved Luciano Pavarotti, Sting, 911, and JFK Jr. Though not in that order nor together.
Wisdom: “So I came to the realization: Nothing in life is unfair. It's just life.”
Who's mentioned?: Carly Simon, Liza Minnelli, Telly Savalas, Sean Penn, Emilio Estevez, Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, Holly Robinson, Dean Cain, LeVar Burton, Linda Ronstadt, Regis Philbin, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Diane Lane, Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, Leif Garrett, Andrew McCarthy, Daryl Hannah, Jacqueline Bisset John Cusack, Sarah Jessica Parker, Janet Jackson, Cary Grant, Melissa Gilbert, Robert Downey Jr., Dennis Quaid, Scott Baio, Tom Cruise, Winona Ryder, Christopher Walken, Michael J. I checked this out of the library last week and am anxiously waiting for my husband to hook my CD-ROM drive back up (my son borrowed it) so I can load it on my phone. I can't wait to listen to it!
ReplyDeleteOh I think you're going to love it. :)
DeleteDefinitely one I want to check out. Glad you FINALLY got the review up... LOL
ReplyDeleteI know right? ;)
DeleteOh yes, I'm so glad yet another person likes this! I only got to read part of it, but enjoyed it immensely!
ReplyDeleteThe book has photos which is way cool.
DeleteI love when Biographies are read by the person themselves :) They are always so awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteMe too :) Makes such a huge difference.
DeleteI think I have this one on my shelf at home. Sounds like I need to listen to it.
ReplyDeleteDo do do :)
DeleteYay!! This sounds amazing...I am adding it to my wishlist right now. I have secretly always loved Robe and Chad Lowe!) shhhh... LOL
ReplyDeleteOur little secret ;)
DeleteOooo! I'd like to read the book, but Lowe narrating sounds even better. Did you see The Carrie Diaries? Rob Lowe was mentioned and was on the cover of an old interview magazine that one of the characters was reading. He was so cute...he still is! I liked him on Brothers and Sisters. Great review!
ReplyDeleteI did! I saw that. Right? I though the same thing "so cute...still is actually". Thank you. I really hope you check it out Julie. You would love it.
DeleteOK this sounds like I must listen to it! I love Rob Lowe
ReplyDeleteO then you simply must. :)
DeleteSound like a WINNER! I have to admit you have me beyond intrigued! So glad this one floated your boat. Now I'll have to keep a look out if this audio goes on sale.
ReplyDeleteYes do :)
DeleteWow...now THAT'S a reccomendation! Sounds great though my book reading self might still opt for the paper version. ^_^
ReplyDeleteI can't vouch for the book but it does have some pictures :)
DeleteI actually only really became a fan of him recently but I would really like to listen to this one! He's in a new Lifetime movie playing the Orlando prosecutor Jeff Ashton this Saturday! I really need to remember to get to this one.
ReplyDeleteOoooooooooo no way! Man I wish I had cable!!! Let me know how it is.
DeleteThis does sound good! I became a fan after seeing him on Parks and Rec, but still need to go through his 80's catalogue :)
ReplyDeleteOoooo have you seen St. Elmo's Fire? 80s classic.
DeleteLove him on Parks and Rec! And I'd rarely pick up an actor's memoir, but you make this sound amazing. :0)
ReplyDeleteIt really is.
DeleteI had no idea he's on that show.
Now I want to watch it.
Thanks for recommending this! It's not something I would ever pick up on my own, but after reading your review, I think I will order it from my library! It sounds great and I think it's awesome that he narrated it himself! As long as he's been in the biz, I can only imagine all the hilarious and incredible stories he must have!
ReplyDeleteYay! Girllll the stories just keep on flowing.
DeleteI wasn't a fan of Rob Lowe, I might just become one :)
ReplyDeleteI wasn't either :)
DeleteWow...this sounds awesome!
ReplyDeleteI also forgot to review some of my favorites from last year! Trying to remedy that this month :)
ReplyDeleteIt's great when an audiobook leaves such an impression. I'll see if I can get my hands on this one.
Right? It's only when I sat back to reflect that I remembered the ones I had missed.
DeleteOooo, now I'm totally curious about this one. I'll have to check to see if the library has the audio. Great review, Juju! And thanks for the recommendation. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks :) I hope you like it!
DeleteI am not sure I would have been interested in this on my own, but your review has convinced me I need to listen to this.
ReplyDeleteYay! I love hearing that. Especially with this one.
DeleteWonderful review! I loved him in West Wing and will have to listen to this.
ReplyDeleteI've never watched it but after hearing him talk about it, I'm thinking I should. :)
DeleteYou've totally sold me. It never caught my eye when it was first released because I do remember most of the "bad" things that happened to him in the 80s and 90s. Everyone loves it, but it still didn't interest me. But your review just convinced me that I really do need to listen to this. Thank goodness I have Audible credits!
ReplyDeleteYay! I hope you like it as much as I did. :) *fingers crossed*
DeleteSounds like a lot of mentions. I've actually never heard anything about this audio before your review so I'm glad you ended up doing it.
ReplyDeleteOh good :) I'm so glad I could help.
Deletei bet it was interesting. i was a big fan of all the members of the brat pack from the 80's. it was hard seeing his downfall, but glad he picked up and is back on track again. sounds like an interesting personal confessional. thanks for the review!

ReplyDeleteYay!!! I think you're going to like it. :)
DeleteI was thinking I'd be better off passing on this one, since I'm not a fan of RL, but then I read your "Warning," so perhaps I will give it a shot. If only for the impersonations ;)
