Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? Audio

Mindy Kaling is a friend in my head. (See Wendyisms for the definition.) In my imagination we meet for coffee and giggle over all her latest woes, mishaps, and dates. Plus I LOVE her show. Team Danny in da house! So anyway I had to listen to her book.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) isn't going to appeal to everyone. You have to "get" Mindy's humor. But if you are a Mindy fan then this book doesn't disappoint. She is her usual mix of cute and funny. She made me smile and chuckle through all her tales of growing up, falling in love with comedy, her gigs, and the funny ways her mind works. My favorite part is how she gets through her workouts. She's basically a hoot. Not always the laugh out loud kind. More the kind that gives you permanent smile and then makes you smile again when you reflect back. So while I wouldn't recommend this memoir to everyone (like I did Rob Lowe's Stories I Only Tell My Friends), it is definitely a smile inducing must for her fans. I also totally recommend the audio. Part of the Mindy experience is in the delivery. Audiobook rating: 4 stars

Words aloud: It's Mindy being Mindy so yeah the narration is perfect. No one else could have narrated this audio. Narrator rating: 5 stars

  2. Glad you ended up enjoying this one, Juju! And it's great that the narration is well done - I always thought that may be a challenge to get the "right" voice in audio books. :)

  3. Oh, Mindy is totally a friend in my head, too! I love her show (also Team Danny -- he is smokin' hot!) and her sense of humor, so I can't believe I haven't picked this one up yet. My only excuse is complete wedding-chaos distraction? Anyway, adding the audio to my library wishlist!

  5. OMG - I am obsessed with this book. I buy books probably twice a year (not counting board books... yikes!), but had to get this one. She just cracks me up! Even just reading the back cover again makes me laugh out loud. Unfortunately... I think you're really right that this one isn't for everyone; about 50% of the people I've recommended it to have loved it. Oh well! I love that she did her own audio book!!

    1. Me too!
OMG did you see the episode where she shows up as an Indian Indiana Jones?
I'm smiling as I type it.

  6. I LOVE when people narrate their own biographies! It just works so darn well :) This is on my wishlist!

    1. Good call.
If you decide you want to know more, try a few episodes of her show The Mindy Project on Hulu.

  8. I don't usually listen to books in audio but biographies are the exception. Especially by comedians. I'm going to give Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? a try. Also...that cover is too cute.

  9. I bet she has a dry sense of humor! Which I find totally hilarious. Thanks for the recommendation.

    1. Yes definitely. As much as I love Mindy, I think the book wouldn't keep my interest the way the audio did. :)

  11. I have actually never watched her show, but I hear she is hilarious. I think I would like her sense of humor, so maybe I will try to catch a few episodes and get this audiobook out of the library. I am intrigued to hear about how she gets through her workouts! ha. Great review!

  12. I've seen this around a few times and it makes me feel old that I have no idea who this girl is. However, that being said, I think her brand of humor would definitely appeal to me.

    1. What? Noooo don't feel that way.
When I first heard of the book actually I didn't really know how she was either. She started in the show The Office. I've never tried it. She won me over with her show The Mindy Project. She's this fabulous mix of cute, sassy, and goofy.

  16. LOVE this girl even though I am not even really very familiar with her work. But from what I've seen, I very much like her style of humour. Thanks for the rec, Juju!

  17. I don't know her well. I haven't seen her show and only know her from The Office. I'm sure I should check out her show first.

  18. I miss her from The Office. :( It isn't the same. I do love her humor. I bet I would like listening to her book more than reading it. That totally makes sense to me.

  20. I love Mindy Kaling SO much, it's really crazy that I haven't picked this up yet. I think I might go for the audio after reading your review. I love when the author reads their own work, especially if they have a sense of humor like MIndy. Glad to hear you liked this, and that it made you smile! Awesome review :-)

  21. I didn't realize it was related to the Mindy Project...very cool!

  22. Now see this one just seems "right" as an audio book. Her personality comes right off the cover so I can only imagine her narrating her own thoughts monologue style for all to hear. Great review as usual! ^_^

  35. I loved this book so much! I was reading it while on my lunch break one day, and then got embarrassed when I realized that I was smiling at my book while in public. And I may have legit laughed out loud. I just loved how she jumps around and has short essays on all the different things that cross her mind! She's definitely a friend in my head :)

  36. I have a lot of authors who are my "friends" too. :D My mom and I pretend that Jen Lancaster is our friend, and always refer to her as just Jen when we talk about her haha! I'm glad you enjoyed this one. I saw her at BEA and she was so freaking funny! I've been wanting to read it forever. My mom loved it.

  46. Thanks for following me on Goodreads and visiting me from Geeky Bloggers Book Blog. I read this book, I bet I would have enjoyed the audiobook more to hear Mindy tell the story herself. The first half cracked me up and I wrote a review on my blog as well. Glad you enjoyed it. I love getting audiobooks, helps with my long commute to work. I'm a new follower on Bloglovin and look forward to seeing what else you recommend. Happy reading!
