Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) isn't going to appeal to everyone. You have to "get" Mindy's humor. But if you are a Mindy fan then this book doesn't disappoint. She is her usual mix of cute and funny. She made me smile and chuckle through all her tales of growing up, falling in love with comedy, her gigs, and the funny ways her mind works. My favorite part is how she gets through her workouts. She's basically a hoot. Not always the laugh out loud kind. More the kind that gives you permanent smile and then makes you smile again when you reflect back. So while I wouldn't recommend this memoir to everyone (like I did Rob Lowe's Stories I Only Tell My Friends), it is definitely a smile inducing must for her fans. I also totally recommend the audio. Part of the Mindy experience is in the delivery. Audiobook rating: 4 stars

Oh, Mindy is totally a friend in my head, too! I love her show (also Team Danny -- he is smokin' hot!) and her sense of humor, so I can't believe I haven't picked this one up yet. My only excuse is complete wedding-chaos distraction? Anyway, adding the audio to my library wishlist!

I haven't really experience her work, but when I see flashes of her on tv she always seems so interesting to me. Glad you enjoyed her book!

OMG - I am obsessed with this book. I buy books probably twice a year (not counting board books... yikes!), but had to get this one. She just cracks me up! Even just reading the back cover again makes me laugh out loud. Unfortunately... I think you're really right that this one isn't for everyone; about 50% of the people I've recommended it to have loved it. Oh well! I love that she did her own audio book!!

I don't usually listen to books in audio but biographies are the exception. Especially by comedians. I'm going to give Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? a try. Also...that cover is too cute.

I've seen this around a few times and it makes me feel old that I have no idea who this girl is. However, that being said, I think her brand of humor would definitely appeal to me.

DeleteWhen I first heard of the book actually I didn't really know how she was either. She started in the show The Office. I've never tried it. She won me over with her show The Mindy Project. She's this fabulous mix of cute, sassy, and goofy.
I have been meaning to read this book for such a long time. After reading your review I think it is time I ordered my copy from the library!

ReplyDeleteI loved this book so much! I was reading it while on my lunch break one day, and then got embarrassed when I realized that I was smiling at my book while in public. And I may have legit laughed out loud. I just loved how she jumps around and has short essays on all the different things that cross her mind! She's definitely a friend in my head :)
