Adios Google Reader

I have been in denial. Serious denial. I know Google Reader is going away. Yet still every day I've gone back. I've been like a junkie or an ostrich with my head buried in the sand. My plan has been to enjoy every last drop. However, that being said, the fabulous Google Reader will stop working one week from today. Moment of silence. So sadly it is time. Time for all of us to be seriously ready to go on without it. My blogging buddies have probably already moved their feeds. So what I am hoping for is that you, my sweet wonderful followers who are not bloggers and may not have moved your feeds yet, will consider following Tales of Whimsy.com another way. My favorite option thus far is Feedly.com. It's easy and looks very similar to Google Reader. Now permit me to give you a few more options and recommendations:

  1. I switched over to feedly about a week ago. :( It does look similar to Google Reader, but it's just not the same. *sigh*

You should. It never hurts to have it backed up in two places I think.

  7. I have everything on Feedly, but I'm hoping to continue to use Reeder, an iTunes app that I absolutely love but which uses Google Reader as its feed. It will make me very, very sad if that stops working next week too, even though Apple said they would work to not let that happen. We shall see.

  8. HAHAHA! This is the update of the WEEK! I threw a bitch when they first announced it. Huffed and puffed, then went over to Bloglovin. I've been using it for a couple of months now and love it. Still feel I need a backup to it. So I'll sign up for Feedly too.

Good idea backing it up in two places. I did that too.

  9. Ha! Love the cartoon - that's pretty much exactly how I felt back when they first announced the death of Google Reader. At least Feedly is a great alternative! It took me almost a month to get used to it, but I love it now.

I'm already following you via Twitter, bloglovin, Feedly, and have an email subscription, so I won't miss out on any Whimsy fabulousness :)

  10. I'm on Feedly AND Bloglovin'. Because I couldn't decide between the two. But I need to make a new 'follow me' button/widget/thing like you did. Blah. Maybe this weekend...

You've just reminded me I should make a button. :)

  11. I imported my google feed into both Bloglovin and feedly back in March..so I've got you double covered. After a few days though I decided to use Feedly...it just seemed neater and more similar to google. I hate that I can't have everything in one place anymore though :(

    1. That's sorta exactly what I did. I think that's why I like Feedly best too.

      Agreed!

  13. I switched to Feedly the week after Google Reader put up their Closing signs. So far I like it. Out of curiosity, I gave BlogLovin a try and haven't liked it much. So I'll probably hang around with the Feedly crowd. That said, there are a lot of readers in the market and more coming up - I can't wait to see what Digg is going to come up with.

    1. I'm kinda like that too. I have BlogLovin'. I like having my feeds in two places but for some reason I can't get into the look of it.

Trueeeee. I do look forward to trying more readers too.

  14. I'm still in denial too! I won't believe it until it's gone.

  19. I've kind of been in denial too! I'm probably going to use bloglovin, though I love feedly too. Thanks for the reminder, and of course I'll follow you no matter what Google does. :-)

  21. I've been in serious denial. As we speak (type), I've still got my Google reader up and I'm happily visiting blogs through it. I've also settled on Feedly though I've been reluctant about it. I'm not great with change. Gah!

  24. It feels like the end of a blog era for me, for some reason. Not that I checked it all that much, but it was a super convenient way for me to see old posts, search for reviews, etc. So far I'm ok with Bloglovin, but the search option is for blogs only (instead of blog content). Bah.

    ReplyDelete

    1. So true. It is like the end of a blog era. Especially for those of us that have been blogging for years.

Oh I hate the lack of search option. I reallllllllllly hope Feedly gets with it and adds it.

  25. Oh Dear! I hate this kind of change. Now I have to learn something all over. UGH!
    I do like Bloglovin though.

  27. I've been toying with Feedly too. I like it, but it's not quite the same is it? I tried bloglovin a little and though it's pretty, it isn't "complete" enough for me, so I will probably alternate between both.

I've also put my name on the list for Digg's new feed reader as well as AOL's. They look like they have a clean look that reminds me of Google Reader, though I won't know until I do get to try them. *sigh*

    1. "Not quite the same" is an excellent way to put it.

I'm kinda the same way with bloglovin. It's pretty but not quite a good fit. Kinda like a cute pair of shoes that are nice, on someone else, but don't feel quite right to me.

Ooooo I hadn't heard about Diggs. I'm off to get on that list too.
      Thanks for the tip! :)

    2. The shoes comparison is excellent!

I just gave a try to both Diggs and AOL's readers. Diggs feels a bit empty and wasn't working to my liking exactly, but it is in Beta mode after all, so it might get better. I really liked the feel of AOL's, it's close to Feedly's in fact, so it will probably be between Feedly and AOL for me. I will have to try them a little longer!

Let me know what you think when you get a chance to try it!

  40. I moved over to feedly about 2 days before google reader went down - waited till last minute. I haven't gotten into a rhythm yet with feedly- I had a system for cycling through blogs weekly with google reader but it doesn't seem to be working as well. I think I need to re-categorize my feeds and see if that improves things.

  41. I still have no idea whether I really needed to switch, but switch I did, at the last minute, to Feedly.
I know where my "feed" (some whipped cream with that?) shows up, yet I never look there. I use my blogroll to read what my blog friends are up to. My next project will be to figure out how to get Feedly to serve coffee, at whim. ;-)

    1. Oh, sweet dears,
