A Good Goodreads Cleaning

Somehow I managed to collect 4,500+ friends on Goodreads. Crazy, right? I think in the beginning, I was just trying to get my blog out there and friend requested everyone in site. But then one day I looked around and realized, I couldn't see my real pals anymore in the crowd. So it was time to let some people go. Way overdue really. That's why yesterday I spent hours deleting friends on Goodreads. Emphasis on HOURS. But it was worth it. I can connect more with you gals now. Yay! So my reason for mentioning this is, if I accidentally deleted you and you want to be my friend on Goodreads, please send me a friend request and please don't hold it against me. It probably just means that I didn't recognize you from your avy/name or I was moving too fast. My apologies doll cakes.

  1. Well done, Juju. Some days I feel like I *need* to do this with Twitter and Blogger because as you say very well here my pals get lost in the feeds - and well, I don't like that notion. Impressed that all those hours were worth it. Go you! :)

      Thank you. :)

    1. Aww thank you. I try.

I found some folks that I was like, "Aw! I miss them!" Then I sent them a brief message.

  3. Well done Juju, I am sure that was very hard to do. I believe you when you said hours, yikes.

  4. I am starting to accumulate too many friends on Goodreads as well. Why on earth does it take hours to delete friends? YIKES! They need an easier way. I have had issues with other things on Goodreads as well….things that should be easy to fix, but they end up being SO VERY time consuming. I hope they figure out the quirks!

    1. Right? One by one. I wish they had a way to do multiple at a time.

Yes. I hear ya. Agreeed. I hope they work things out too.

    1. Just checked and yuppers. We're good. :)

It helps when the Goodreads name and/or avy are the same as the one I'm accustomed to seeing.

  7. I so need to do this on both Goodreads and Twitter! I can't see anything through the constant stream of data from people I don't know!

    1. Yes. Right? I'm so grateful for Plume. Totally helps me manage what I see on Twitter.

  8. I need to clean out my Goodreads shelves and reorganize them. I've been cleaning out my gmail inbox, and it's nowhere near manageable, sigh. I sent you a friend request on goodreads. :)

  9. I used to friend everyone who asked until started getting hit with author spam. Now I check everyone out first and I only have my most trusted reviewers on my tops list.

I haven't had the energy to actually clear it out yet. lol

    1. Oh yah. I hear ya. That started happening to me too. Now I try to avoid authors I'm not familiar with.

  10. I know what you mean! I went through the same phase last year when I felt I had too many friends and couldn't remember who half of them were or when/why I added them.

  11. That must have taken some time! I just did the same thing on Bloglovin' (and on Facebook last year). A daunting task but definitely worth it! :)

  12. I really need to do this, all around and not just on Goodreads. I think I have some defunct blogs in my lists!

  13. I recently did this, although I only deleted people who have been inactive or didn't have a lot of books in common with me. I think I need to do a good spring cleaning though!

    1. It really is. I love it for tracking books I want to read. I log in when I'm at the library for ideas.

  15. I definitely can relate! I added quite a few people too while trying to spread the word about my blog, now I can't keep up with what my book blogger friends are reading! I'm definitely going to have to try to do some Spring cleaning on my goodreads too!
I need to try and use goodreads more, it's such an awesome site!

  18. I love cleaning out social media / network pages... I swear you feel so much lighter when it's done! I just went through my Instagram account because I had followed so many people when I first started (or through giveaways). It felt like a cleansing, haha!

  19. Wow, you did have a bunch! I recently started using it more so I don't think I have that many friends.

  20. Funny you mentioned this because just a few days ago I also realized I had acquired quite a few GR friends, only a fraction of which I actually interact with regularly and have a significant number of books in common with me. So then I started to delete some... and then I realized that the task was much greater than I had time for (definitely HOURS) and I had to ditch it! I'll have to carve out some time for it later though because it can be hard to see through the spam sometimes!

    1. Right? Yes. Exactly. I put it off for like ever because I just didn't want to deal with how long it takes.

      Good luck sugar.

  21. I was just thinking about the whole friends thing on GR, I feel like there are so many on my feed I dont even see anything....but like you I have to go through 4000 people, UGH!!!

  23. Whoa, I can see why you felt the need for spring-cleaning! I have about 250, and sometimes looking at my feed I feel like I have too many. But I am also happy to see I wasn't washed away :) Phew!

  24. LOLOL!!!! and yet I can't even figure out how to friend my sister. :) I don't get on Goodreads often--not sure if we're friends or not--but 4,500 is a lot of gals!

  26. NCIS-LA had one of their characters saying they do electronic spring cleaning every year. Guess what it's a good way to go. I can totally see how you wound up with 4,500...you are a total sweet heart.
btw, work phones don't let me comment on blogs how rude! ;)

  29. I just spend quite a while decluttering my Facebook friend list just last week. Goodreads... I can see how you would accumulate lots of friends there, because you don't share as much as on Facebook, but it just becomes kind of useless when there's that many people, right? Which makes me think I should check how many I have, since I say yes to pretty much everyone :-)

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes exactly. So useless when you can't see through the fog. Good luck! And yay for clearing Facebook.

  30. Oh, you're brave! When I think of the bloggish tasks I've let go for so long (going back and making all of the text in my 2009-2011 posts a uniform font?!) I cringe. Getting Goodreads in order sounds like a tough job, but congrats on tackling it!

    1. You're gonna do that? A uniform font? You go girl. That one would make me quesy just thinking abou it.

      Thank you! :)

  31. I'm not even on Goodreads anymore, but I remember it being yet another bloggy thing to upkeep. Good for you for taking the time to clean it up, I'm impressed! It will definitely be a better experience if it's just people you know and not just a ton of random people. :-)

  32. I probably need to do this. Le Sigh. I accept everyone who adds me but I don't know anyone anymore.

  33. Wow, I definitely believe you when you say that took hours. What a project! I'm honored to still be on your list :) I recently did something similar, but instead of removing friends I prioritized which were "top friends" so I could see updates from my actual friends and not just people who followed my updates but I don't actually know them.

    1. You go girl! I like the top friends feature too but my pile was just soooo big I had to purge it. However, from this point forward, I will definitely be utilizing the top friends feature too. :)
